VTAC Service Dog Qualifications – MUST PROVIDE DD214 OR VALID DISCHARGE FORM. Dishonorable discharges do not qualify.
- Genuine need for a service dog due to a physical, psychiatric, or developmental disability
- Ability to independently care for and maintain the health of a service dog
- Stable living environment suitable for a canine companion
- Financial capacity to cover ongoing costs associated with dog ownership
- Commitment to attend required training sessions and follow-up appointments
- Willingness to integrate the service dog into daily life and public outings
- Physical ability to handle and control a service dog in various situations
- Emotional stability to form a working partnership with the animal
- Support from family members or caregivers, if applicable
- Age requirement (typically 18 years or older, with some exceptions for younger applicants)
- Clean record, free of animal abuse charges
- Ability to provide references from healthcare professionals or support workers
- Demonstrated understanding of service dog etiquette and public access rights
- Commitment to ongoing training and maintaining the dog’s skills
- Patience and dedication to work through the adjustment period with a new service animal
